phytanic acid, a branched chain fatty acid, is an important component of fatty acid intake, occuring in meat, fish and dairy products. due to its methylation, it cannot be a substrate for acyl-coa dehydrogenase and cannot enter the mitochondrial beta oxidation pathway.
