Metabolite Identification
Common NameSilica
DescriptionSilica, also known as (sio2)N or [sio2], belongs to the class of inorganic compounds known as metalloid oxides. These are inorganic compounds containing an oxygen atom of an oxidation state of -2, in which the heaviest atom bonded to the oxygen is a metalloid. Silica is found, on average, in the highest concentration within common hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) and cottonseeds (Gossypium). Silica has also been detected, but not quantified in, oats (Avena sativa). This could make silica a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Based on a literature review a significant number of articles have been published on Silica.
