DescriptionOphthalmic acid, also known as ophthalmate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as oligopeptides. These are organic compounds containing a sequence of between three and ten alpha-amino acids joined by peptide bonds. Ophthalmic acid is a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Ophthalmic acid is an L-glutamine derivative in which L-glutamine is substituted by a 1--1-oxobutan-2-yl at the terminal amino nitrogen atom. Ophthalmic acid is an analogue of glutathione isolated from crystalline lens.
